Weight Stereotyping: The Secret Way People May Judge You Based On Your Body

This was a controversial post from Glamour magazine that really got people talking! Read an excerpt below and click on the link to read more.

Excerpt:

“What our poll shows about the assumptions women hold…

Heavy women are pegged as…

“lazy” 11 times as often as thin women;
“sloppy” nine times;
“undisciplined” seven times;
“slow” six times as often.
While thin women are seen as…

“conceited” or “superficial” about eight times as often as heavy women;
“vain” or “self-centered” four times as often;
“bitchy,” “mean,” or “controlling” more than twice as often.
Even the “good” labels are unfair. An overweight woman may be five times as likely to be perceived as “giving” as a skinny one.

“But it just fits into the stereotype that thin women are not that way,” explains Ann Kearney-Cooke, Ph.D. “It’s still putting women in a box based on their body size.”

Controversial election comes to a close

Tiffany Dollar and Marlon Holmes are the newly elected president and vice president of ASPSU. The election results of the 2012–13 Associated Students of Portland State University election were released after the resolution of the eligibility of candidate Diamond Zerework. Zerework was initially disqualified from the candidacy on Monday but was reinstated Tuesday.

The race was close, with Dollar and Holmes receiving 741 votes. Zerework and her vice presidential candidate Anam Pasha came in second place with 678 votes.

Students gathered in the North Park Blocks room of Smith Memorial Student Union to hear the results, which were announced by Elections Board Chair Jesse Hansen.

Dollar and Holmes ran on the platform of student advocacy and tuition reduction. Both Holmes and Dollar consider themselves to be non-traditional students, and their candidacy statement told students that they were “just like you.”

The newly elected student fee committee members are Sean Green, Cindy Reyes, Katie Slayden, James Au, Tyson Jones, Nhi Vu and Krystine McCants.

2012 election results

President
Tiffany Dollar

Vice President
Marlon Holmes

SFC Chair
Nick Rowe

SFC Members
Sean Green, Cindy Reyes, Katie Slayden, James Au, Tyson Jones, Nhi Vu, Krystine McCants

Senators
Rosa Martinez, Phoenix Singer, Yesenia Silvia-Hernandez, Michael Collins, Amber Kelsal, Anthony Stine, Melissa Timora, Ryan Day, Elvin Ramirez, Tom Worth, Raz Budhatoki, Moayad “Moa” Lingga, Soledad Hernandez, Michelle Jeong, Julia Nguyen

The new ASPSU constitution was passed by an overwhelming margin, with 2,731 votes received in favor of the revisions.

The winning senators are Rosa Martinez, Phoenix Singer, Yesenia Silva-Hernandez, Michael Collins, Julia Ngyuen, Anthony Stine, Soledad Hernandez, Amber Kelsal, Michelle Jeong, Ryan Day, Melissa Timora, Elvin Ramirez, Raz Budhathoki, Moayad Lingga and Tom Worth.

There was a 9.32 percent voter turnout for the election, a total just under ASPSU’s goal of 10 percent voter turnout. There were a total of 2,771 votes cast in the election. Hansen considered the turnout to be “fantastic.”

Vice President-elect Holmes was surprised and elated over the results. “I was asked to run, and I never intended on running or planned on running,” Holmes said. “I love what I do here as far as advocating for students. I’ve learned the same issues I’ve had are the same issues that other students have.”

Dollar and Holmes plan to hit the ground running. They are currently planning on working on several projects ranging from tuition regulation to communication on campus.

“Our platform really focuses on community building on campus as well,” Dollar said.

“We’ve already completed our campaign promise by extending the hours in the Broadway computer lab to seven days a week,” she added.

“The main project I have in mind is to make a working group with Professor Thomas Potiowsky, the chair of the economics department. He is a former state economist. I was going to present to him solutions for funding tuition here in the state and how we can present that to the next billing legislature.” Holmes said that the goal is to come up with a way to fund education within the state.

“The whole campaign was for students, and I actually received the news while I was in a legislative delegation,” Dollar said. During the time of the interview, she was in Salem, where she attended a higher education committee meeting during the legislature’s interim working days.

When asked to comment about the controversy surrounding the eligibility of candidate Zerework, Dollar said, “I was dedicated to running a really clean campaign…I respect Diamond as a candidate, as a viable woman candidate. I was actually glad she was not disqualified from the race. I would have supported her had she won the election.”

Cells from a cancer line known as HeLa

The first volume of a “book of cancer knowledge” has been published, which scientists say will speed up the search for new cancer drugs.

The “encyclopaedia” details how hundreds of different cancer cells respond to anti-cancer agents.

UK, US and European researchers say the data, published in Nature, is a step towards tailoring cancer medicine to a patient’s genetic profile.

A cancer charity said the work would help in testing new cancer drugs.

Cancer cells grown in the laboratory are an essential tool in cancer research.

Hundreds of different cell lines exist, allowing scientists to study the effect of new cancer drugs on the human body.

Researchers discovered that remembering the past with regret or bitterness worsens health.

The study by the University of Granada (UGR) found that people’s attitude to past events, present experiences or future expectations, influences their perception of health and their quality of life.

Cristián Oyanadel, who co-authored the study, said: “We have observed that when people are negative about past events in their life, they also have a pessimist or fatalistic attitude towards current events.

Current techniques for detecting MRSA can take a full day

A test to show whether wounds or lesions have been infected with bacteria including MRSA has been developed by Edinburgh University scientists.

It works by taking swabs from a wound or sores, which are then analysed using a strip with electrical sensors that can detect MRSA.

It is hoped the tests will allow almost immediate detection of the bacteria.

This would allow patients to be given more effective drugs straight away.

The swab samples are currently processed in the laboratory to increase the amount of bacteria present before they are tested with the strips.

But the researchers hope to avoid the need for this in the future by improving the strip’s sensitivity in order to allow the tests to be used in GP practices and people’s homes.

Laboratory tests to confirm whether MRSA is present in a wound can take a full day using conventional techniques.

The new test was developed using swabs from diabetic foot ulcers taken from patients attending NHS Lothian’s Diabetic Foot Clinic at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Detection of MRSA in these patients is important to prevent the spread of infection, which can lead to the amputation of limbs and increase the risk of mortality.

Looking at the back of the eye may offer an insight into the health of someone’s brain, according to the US researchers.

A small study, published in the journal Neurology, linked damage to the retina with declining brain function.

They believe issues with the blood supply may be damaging both the eye and the brain.

Alzheimer’s Research UK said the study showed the importance of a healthy heart.

The eye condition the researchers were looking at was retinopathy, which is common in patients with Type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure. Damage to the retina can eventually lead to blindness.

Scientists followed 511 women, who were 65 or older, for a decade. Some 39 were diagnosed with retinopathy.

Those with the eye condition tended to have lower scores in tests of brain function, including memory and abstract reasoning exams.
